10-year-old Jessie Almoza from Benguet is selling mushrooms and truffles to fund his education. Discover his inspiring roadside business and resilience.

Growing up in the Cordillera mountains, it's common to encounter various organic mushrooms, known locally as "o-ong," and truffles, called "bo-o." Collecting these natural treasures and learning to differentiate between edible and inedible varieties is a cherished part of local life. During the rainy season, the Cordilleran mountains overflow with these mushrooms and truffles, along with wild plants and fruit-bearing trees. Elders often speak of these gifts of nature with great appreciation.

Benguet's young seller, Jessie Almoza, turns mushrooms and truffles into school funds.

Jessie Almoza: A Young Entrepreneur's Journey

At just 10 years old, Jessie Almoza has turned the abundance of "o-ong" and "bo-o" into a small business. Jessie has been seen selling bags of these mushrooms and truffles on the roadsides to motorists. His main customers are locals who are familiar with the health benefits of these organic offerings.

Jessie's early entrepreneurial spirit has garnered praise from both online and offline communities. His determination to make a positive impact is evident. As noted by Ryan, a local buyer:

"Maganda naman....., na meron silang ginagawa habang wala silang pasok. Dati rati pag ganitong season, merong ganyan na binebenta dito,"

This statement highlights the significance of Jessie's efforts during the season.

Challenges and Perseverance

Despite his young age, Jessie's business has encountered challenges due to a community lockdown implemented in response to the ongoing pandemic. The fourth-grade student from Itogon, Benguet, has been saving his earnings in a plastic bottle to buy school supplies. In his own words:

"Gagamitin ko para makaipon ng pera para pambili ng gamit ko sa school."

His commitment to supporting his education and family despite the difficulties is commendable.

Jessie's family situation adds another dimension to his story. With his father suffering from a stroke and his parents lacking stable employment, Jessie's efforts are crucial for their livelihood. His mother and sister rise early each day to collect mushrooms and truffles, which they sell on the roadsides to sustain the family. Their hard work underscores the essential role these natural resources play in their daily lives.

Embracing the Gifts of Nature

Jessie and his family approach their circumstances with gratitude and resilience. They honor the gifts of nature with a thankful heart and make the most of what they have. Their ability to adapt and survive amidst the pandemic reflects a deep appreciation for life's blessings.

A Lesson in Gratitude and Resilience

Jessie's story serves as a powerful reminder that blessings come in various forms and circumstances. It encourages us to recognize and appreciate the gifts we receive, no matter their nature. The way Jessie and his family embrace their situation underscores the importance of gratitude and resilience.

Considering Jessie's journey prompts us to reflect on our own blessings and how we can acknowledge them in our lives.
