On August 4, 2024, a heartbreaking drowning incident occurred along the Chico River in Sitio Cheppay, Barangay Bontoc Ili, Bontoc, Mountain Province. The tragic event resulted in the deaths of two young children, both aged four. The victims were identified as Chris "Foman-eg" Pangod Payocyoc and Seth "Paspas" Pangod Comafay, who were residents of Barangay Bontoc Ili.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
The Bontoc Operations Center received a distress call at 3:20 PM from a member of the Bontoc Emergency Response Team (BERT). In response, the Bontoc Emergency Operations Center was activated. A comprehensive team including the Bontoc Municipal Police Station (MPS), Bontoc Municipal Fire Station (MFS), Municipal Health Office, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Bontoc Emergency Response Team, family members, and community volunteers mobilized for a Search, Rescue, and Retrieval operation.
The first victim, Chris "Foman-eg" Pangod Payocyoc, was found by his father, Jason Ganisi Payocyoc, near the incident site. Despite immediate transport to Bontoc General Hospital and a series of revival efforts, Chris was declared deceased due to drowning at 3:40 PM. His remains were subsequently returned to their home for final rites.
Seth "Paspas" Pangod Comafay was discovered by responders at 3:56 PM. Resuscitation attempts at the scene proved unsuccessful, and he was declared dead due to drowning by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Diga Kay Gomez. Seth's remains were taken to his home in Sitio Chakkong, Bontoc Ili.
Community Support and Rituals
Mayor Jerome "Chagsen" Tudlong, Jr. expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims. He extended his gratitude to everyone who participated in the rescue efforts and encouraged the community to offer prayers for the children's eternal rest. In addition, Barangay Kagawad William Cherweg of Bontoc Ili performed a cleansing ritual to honor the victims and provide solace to the grieving families.
The community's swift response and collective support highlight the strength and solidarity present in times of tragedy. This incident underscores the importance of community cooperation and emergency preparedness in addressing and managing unforeseen calamities.
