In Mangali, Tanudan, a remarkable young Igorot has recently brought immense pride to his community and the entire Kalinga Province. Airman Laurence Liwaliw, just 24 years old, has made headlines for his outstanding performance in the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Basic Military Training. Enlisted in 2023, Liwaliw concluded his rigorous 4-month training on August 18, 2024, in Lipa City, finishing at the top of his class.
Achievements and Recognition
Liwaliw's journey through the Basic Military Training was nothing short of exceptional. As a member of BMT Class "KINAADMAN" 2024 Bravo, he emerged as the top performer out of 607 airmen.
His dedication and hard work were recognized with the prestigious Commander Air Education, Training, and Doctrine Command (AETDC) award. This accolade is a testament to his commitment and excellence throughout the training.
Inspiration and Motivation
For Liwaliw, the path to the military was deeply personal. He was inspired by his four older siblings, who are also in the military service. His aspiration to join the uniformed services was driven by a desire to emulate his siblings and make his family proud. After earning his degree in Industrial Technology, majoring in Electricity, Liwaliw applied to the PAF, eager to follow in his siblings' footsteps.
"Ginusto ko talaga na makapasok gawa ng iba kong kapatid ay nasa military din, at gusto ko rin na maging proud sila sa akin lalo na ang aking mga magulang," Liwaliw said.
He emphasized that his primary goal was not necessarily to top his class but to pass every activity and successfully complete the training, which began on April 22, 2024. His focus was on overcoming each challenge and proving to himself that he could succeed.

Like many trainees, Liwaliw faced numerous challenges during his training. However, his determination and drive kept him motivated. His resilience in the face of adversity demonstrated his commitment to his personal and professional goals.
