On May 12, 2024, a devastating incident occurred at the boundary of Lubuagan and Pasil in Kalinga, Philippines, resulting in the loss of two brave soldiers and injuries to four others. The soldiers, members of the 54th Infantry Battalion, were on duty conducting a security operation against communist terrorist groups when tragedy struck during a thunderstorm.

The Incident

Around 4:30 p.m. local time, lightning struck the troops, claiming the lives of Corporal Andrew Monterubio and Private First Class Inmongog Aronchay. The lightning bolt caught them off guard, also leaving Sergeant Dennis Bananao, Private First Class Melvin Danggalan, Private First Class Abegil Awingan, and Private First Class Riel Angya injured and in need of immediate medical attention.

In a heartfelt statement, the 5th Infantry Division, led by Commander MGen. Audrey Pasia, expressed their condolences, saying, "My heart bleeds for them." The division emphasized the impact of the soldiers' sacrifice, stating, "The deaths of the two serve as an inspiration to the 5ID."

Corporal Monterubio, from Gamu, Isabela, and Private First Class Aronchay, from Sadanga, Mt. Province, are remembered for their service and dedication to defending the nation's security and peace.
