History Month at La verdad Christian College- Caloocan

My teaching journey began almost a decade ago, guiding students through social studies and related courses. I found my passion in educating young minds, dedicating myself to being a Senior High School teacher and college instructor. My path led me to institutions like De La Salle Araneta University, Technological University of the Philippines, La Verdad Christian College, and the University of the Philippines - Visayas. However, in February 2023, my teaching career took an unexpected turn when I became pregnant following a heartbreaking miscarriage in September 2022. This blessing brought with it a shift in my priorities, leading me to embrace motherhood and entrepreneurship full-time.

Me with my students from De La Salle Araneta - University

One month after welcoming my baby into the world, my husband's business asked me to join their team. I was enthusiastic at first, eager to contribute and work alongside them. But as time passed, I began witnessing things that I did not want to be associated with. Labor law violations, the degrading treatment of employees, and a blatant disregard for work ethics were just a few of the issues I encountered. After only two months, I wanted to leave. However, I stayed for nine months because they couldn't find a replacement, and it was, after all, my husband's business. It was a difficult time, but I told myself that I could make a difference-that I could change the work environment for the better.

Just as I resolved to do my best to bring about those changes, I was abruptly cut from the company. The most disheartening part was that my husband's business partner, who had asked me to join in the first place, didn't even have the courage to tell me face-to-face. This happened when I was only 10 months postpartum, and while it was a challenging experience, it was also a turning point.

Despite these trials, my passion for education has never waned. Teaching is still deeply rooted in my heart, and I continue to seek ways to inspire others, even outside the academe. This passion, paired with my new role as a mother, opened my eyes to the challenges that many young and single mothers face. Although I was fortunate to have a strong support system, financial savings, and a college degree before welcoming my baby, I realized that not everyone is as privileged. This realization inspired me to reach out and support those who may not have completed their education, who experienced early pregnancy, or who are struggling without a reliable network of support.

In response, I have begun organizing events aimed at empowering young mothers, single mothers, and out-of-school youth in our community. These initiatives are close to my heart because I believe everyone deserves the chance to rise above life's obstacles, just as I've been able to, with gratitude for the blessings that have come my way despite the hardships.

Transitioning from teaching to entrepreneurship has been an exciting and fulfilling chapter in my life. After a year of balancing the demands of life, I longed for a space where I could slow down and enjoy life's simple pleasures. This desire became the driving force behind opening Slow Zone Cafe-a sanctuary for those who, like me, crave a pause from the rush of everyday life.
