CDT 1CL Jake Pel-ey Matiw is an Igorot, a member of the indigenous peoples of the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines. He grew up in a small village in the mountains of Bontoc, Mountain Province. His parents were farmers, and he and his siblings helped out with the family's land. They knew that education was the key to a better future, so they worked hard to send their children to school. Matiw excelled in school, and he was accepted to the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).
At the PMA, Matiw is currently the Humility Battalion Commander of the Cadet Corps. He is one of the few students from a rural area, and he has had to adjust to the rigorous academic and physical demands of the school. But he never gives up, and he is determined to graduate and become a soldier.
