Police Colonel Michael Bawayan Jr., provincial director of the Sulu Police Provincial Office, was shot dead by a fellow cop in Jolo, Sulu at around 4:20 p.m. on August 6, 2021.
The 49-year-old Igorot who traces his roots to Sagada, Mountain Province and a resident of Baguio City, was killed by a fellow policeman at a Quarantine Control Point (Checkpoint) in Big Bites, Barangay Austrias, Jolo, Sulu.
The suspect was identified as Police Staff Sergeant Imran Jilah, 43, a resident of Kasalamatan Village, Brgy. San Raymundo, Jolo, Sulu, assigned to the 3rd Maneuver Platoon of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (2PMFC).
According to Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) Regional Director BGEN Eden Ugale, PCOL Bawayan conducted an inspection at the quarantine control point in Brgy. Asturias, Jolo.
The police official allegedly scolded and kicked the on-duty policemen taking shelter at the checkpoint, which led to a heated argument.
At the height of the confrontation, PSSG Jilah pulled out his gun and shot PCOL Bawayan point-blank. The Bawayan security team retaliated, resulting in the killing of PSSG Jilah.
PCOL Bawayan was taken to the Maguindanao Integrated Provincial Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
