In a recent ceremony at the SPD Grandstand in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, Police Brigadier General Mark Danglait Pespes, an Igorot police officer from Tadian, Mountain Province, became the new chief of the Southern Police District (SPD), succeeding Police Brigadier General Roderick Mariano.
The ceremony, presided over by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief, Police Brigadier General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., marked a fresh start for the Southern Police District.
General Pespes addressed his colleagues, the men and women of SPD, with a message of unity. He said, "Sa ating mga kasama (To our colleagues), men and women of SPD, we will be working together. Our goal is to keep a peaceful environment, a safe place to live and do business."
A Heroic Background
General Pespes is known for his courageous actions in October 2022 when he rescued former Senator Leila de Lima, who was taken hostage inside the PNP Custodial Center. For his extraordinary bravery, General Pespes was awarded the prestigious Medalya ng Kadakilaan.
In this context of heroism and dedication to public safety, the community looks forward to a brighter future under General Pespes' leadership.
A Dramatic Escape Attempt
The events that brought General Pespes into the spotlight began when three detainees, Arnel Cabintoy, Idang Susukan, and Feliciano Sulayao Jr., attempted to escape from Camp Crame's detention facility. They stabbed a police officer while trying to make their escape.
In the ensuing chaos, two of the detainees were shot dead by a police officer. Sulayao, the remaining detainee, managed to take de Lima hostage.
Sulayao initially demanded a helicopter, a Hummer, and media presence to aid in his escape. It was during a moment when he asked for water that General Pespes saw an opportunity to end the hostage situation.
A Recognized Promotion
In December 2022, in recognition of his bravery and dedication, General Pespes was promoted to one-star general during an oath-taking and donning of ranks ceremony. This ceremony was presided over by PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. at Camp Crame in Quezon City.
This promotion solidified his position as a leader and a symbol of valor within the police force.
A Bright Future Under Strong Leadership
General Pespes' appointment as the new chief of the Southern Police District marks a new beginning for the district. His proven courage, commitment to safety, and recognized promotion with the Medalya ng Kadakilaan suggest a promising future for the community.
The seamless connection between his heroic background, his recognized promotion, and his appointment as SPD chief reinforces the belief in a brighter and safer future for all.
