As political dynamics shift across the Philippines, the question of whether Baguio City will see the rise of political dynasties has become a point of discussion. Amid growing concerns about political influence and governance, Mayor Benjamin Magalong has made his stance clear. At a recent event, Magalong addressed the issue directly, providing insight into the city's position on political dynasties and outlining his commitment to maintaining a governance system free from entrenched family politics.
Mayor Magalong's Firm Stand Against Political Dynasties
During the official launch of the coalition Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan on Friday, August 23, Mayor Benjamin Magalong addressed the prospect of political dynasties in Baguio City. In an impromptu interview, he was asked if he would support a solicitation for an anti-dynasty bill. Magalong's response was emphatic, reflecting the city's unique stance on political dynasties.
"Oo naman. Iba kasi sa Baguio eh. Alam mo, ang Baguio, hindi talaga naniniwala sa political dynasty," Magalong stated. This translates to, "Yes. It is different in Baguio. You know, Baguio does not believe in a political dynasty."
He further clarified, "Very strong ang kanilang sentiments against political dynasty kaya walang nagkakaroon ng political dynasty," meaning, "They have very strong sentiments against political dynasties, that's why it will never happen in the city."
The Role of Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan
The launch of Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan highlights a concerted effort to address political dynasties, corruption, and electoral fraud. The coalition includes a diverse group of stakeholders such as the religious sector, military and uniformed personnel, youth, women, business professionals, and civil society organizations. Their mission is to end the influence of political dynasties and advocate for good governance.
Magalong's Commitment to Good Governance
As the convener of Mayors 4 Good Governance (M4GG), Mayor Magalong underscored the coalition's focus on raising awareness about good governance and combating corruption. "'Yong advocacy namin actually is designed to really raise awareness among the youth. So far as M4GG is concerned, talagang very strong 'yung campaign namin in good governance, particularly in the fight against corruption," he said, which translates to, "Our advocacy is actually designed to raise awareness among the youth. So far as M4GG is concerned, we have a very strong campaign for good governance, particularly in the fight against corruption."
Magalong also made a firm commitment regarding his role in Baguio's political landscape: "One thing that I can assure you for Magalong sa city ng Baguio (in the city of Baguio), I will never get myself in political dynasty. 'Yan ang commitment ko."
Exploring Legal Mechanisms for Reform
The discussion around a people's initiative to pass an anti-dynasty bill gained traction following comments from Atty. Alexander Lacson. Lacson highlighted the constitutional mechanism for such initiatives, explaining, "The people's initiative is a power granted to the Filipino people in the Constitution to pass a law." He detailed the requirements, noting, "Ang requirement is minimum of 3 percent per Congressional district. Ilagay po natin na 250,000 po 'yong botante on an average per Congressional district. Ano po 'yong 3 percent nyan? That's 7,500 votes... Minimum kasi 'yon, what we need is 10 percent. 'Pag nag 10 percent, that's 25,000 signatures in the petition."
Looking Ahead
The debate about political dynasties in Baguio City reflects a broader commitment to ensuring transparent and accountable governance. Mayor Magalong's stance and the initiatives of Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan demonstrate a proactive approach to preventing political dynasties and fostering a fair political environment. As the city continues to uphold these principles, Baguio sets an example for other regions striving for political reform and integrity.
