Tor Sagud, an esteemed Igorot artist with Kankana-ey and Ibaloy roots, was honored as one of the ten recipients of the 2023 The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards. The announcement was made by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines on March 12, recognizing Sagud for his outstanding contributions to heritage promotion.
A Surprising Recognition
Sagud expressed his astonishment at being selected for the award. He noted, "I did not expect to be one of the awardees, as I was just sharing my work and my philosophy to one of the TOYM selection committees, who earlier called me for the possibility of being one of the TOYM candidates." This unexpected honor underscores the impact of his work on the appreciation and preservation of Igorot culture.
The Igorotak Book Series
Sagud is renowned for his Igorotak book series, which includes the 2019 publication Igorotak: An Illustrated Guide. This book presents a vibrant depiction of Igorot culture, featuring illustrations of traditional attire, local flora, and fauna. Sagud's unique approach has proven influential, inspiring other authors and educators both locally and internationally.
"True enough, after a few years, many authors locally and abroad had followed it and even improved it. They also applied it in other forms of media. They saw the effectiveness of my formula," Sagud remarked.
Continuing Impact and Future Projects
Sagud's work has extended beyond books, influencing various forms of art and media. He has seen his concepts adopted by fashion designers, painters, muralists, and ethnic dancers who showcase the diverse ethno-linguistic groups of the highlands. He noted, "Even foreigners drop a message of appreciation once in a while," reflecting the global reach of his contributions.
Currently, Sagud is working on Igorotak: Igorot Creatures Collection, with volumes 2 and 3 planned for release this year. He is also developing a new version of Igorotak: An Illustrated Guide, which will highlight each of the six provinces in the Cordillera. Additionally, through his Studio Sagud, he is producing Kadangyan Komiks and supporting young creatives, particularly in animation.
