A King Cobra was recently spotted in Guiwe, Poblacion, Mankayan, Benguet, with the photo uploaded on Facebook by resident Cal-on Aplod Walis. An admin from the group "PHILIPPINES SNAKE ID" confirmed that this is indeed a King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), identifiable by its longer body, which contrasts with the shorter, stockier build of the Philippine cobra (Naja philippinensis).

The King Cobra is one of the most dangerous snakes in the world, known for its potent venom that can cause severe neurological damage and death if not treated promptly. Its ability to deliver a large amount of venom in a single bite makes it particularly lethal.

This sighting follows documented encounters of cobras in Mankayan, including more than two prior sightings and a recent report from the barangay of Taneg. The increased presence of cobras may be attributed to habitat disruptions, changes in prey availability, or seasonal migration patterns as they search for food and shelter.

When encountering a cobra, residents should remain calm and avoid making sudden movements. It is crucial not to approach or attempt to handle the snake, as this can provoke a defensive reaction. Instead, people should back away slowly and seek safety in a secure location. Reporting the sighting to local authorities is essential for proper handling and to ensure community safety.

As cobra sightings continue to rise, staying informed and vigilant is vital for maintaining a safe environment for both residents and wildlife.
