Much has been said, written, and speculated about our journey-some with kindness, others with curiosity, and a few from the edges of assumption. But stories, especially those that span continents, generations, and quiet sacrifices, deserve to be told with honesty and heart. This is ours-not to defend or impress, but to remember, honor, and offer clarity to a life filled with purpose, love, and a touch of the extraordinary.
My name is Maynard Victor Erece, though most people from my hometown of New Lucban, Baguio City, simply call me Toto. I was raised amid the pine trees and mountains of Baguio, a city where mist and stories linger in the cool air. I'm married to Josephine Ana Borja-Jo-Ann-who grew up in Navy Base, Pacdal. We met as students at the University of the Philippines in Baguio and married in Pacdal, where the mountains and our shared experiences shaped the foundation of our life together.
Like many immigrant families, we carry with us countless stories-each filled with triumphs, challenges, and moments of both joy and heartache. There are stories of navigating the complexities of new cultures, of preserving our roots while embracing foreign ways, and the constant search for belonging in a world that can sometimes feel divided. We've fought battles against racism, struggled with the weight of nationalism in unfamiliar lands, and learned to redefine who we are. These stories-of resilience, perseverance, and vulnerability-are an essential part of our journey, and we will share them when the time is right.
As Baguio parents, we are especially proud of our journey with our children. It is often said that where parents invest their time, resources, and talents, there too lies their greatest priority. Our children have always been at the heart of everything we do. As they often say, "Show, not tell." In our family, it's the quiet moments of support and presence, not the grand gestures, that have shaped their growth. Our greatest joy has been walking alongside them, offering guidance, and watching them become the incredible people they are today.
Our eldest, Jozef Maynard Borja Erece, is one of the youngest people in the world to be admitted as a lawyer, achieving this milestone at just 18. He holds a Masters in Corporate Law from Cambridge University and a Master of Law (International Law) from the Australian National University. But what sets Jozef apart even further is his extraordinary legal journey-he passed three major international Bar Examinations in one year: The Bar Examinations of England and Wales, the New York Bar Examinations, and the Queensland Bar Examinations. This makes him a multi-jurisdictional lawyer-a feat that speaks to his unparalleled dedication and intellect. For those interested in connecting with him, you can find him with basic internet searches.
Our youngest, Maynah Lourelllen Borja Erece, is a gifted individual in her own right. In December 2022, she graduated with a double degree in Science (Psychology) and Arts (Critical and Creative Writing) from the University of Southern Queensland, earning the highest honors. Alongside her academic achievements, Maynah has made her mark as one of Ipswich City's most influential women under 25. She has produced numerous festival events and stage productions and co-authored Three Worlds with her brother, Jozef. Currently, she's pursuing a master's degree at the Australian National University, continuing to build on her impressive body of work. For those curious about her authorship, the Three Worlds is available worldwide through on-line links.
Through sharing our story, we hope to ignite dreams and honor the spirit of Baguio-a place where scholarship, family, and adventure come together. Life is a journey, and it's not just about reaching a destination. It's about embracing the challenges along the way. Through these challenges, we discover our true selves. Life's adventure asks us to dig deep, push our limits, and find strength in the face of adversity. It's these moments, the ones that test us, that make life meaningful and worth living. As you read our story, we hope it inspires you to embark on your own journey-one that challenges you, shapes you, and brings you closer to the person you are destined to become.
